Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Polder Classic Cooking Thermometer/Timer, GraphiteCustomer Review: Good for a while then probe broke Summary: 2 StarsThis was a great thermometer until the probe broke on the 3rd use I doubt I'll buy another considering the probe is $10 by it's self. I'll stick with the old fashioned non-electric thermometers from now on.
Customer Review: Wonderful Cooking Thermometer Summary: 5 StarsI've used thermometers in cooking for years and years. I have two older versions of this thermometer. I needed a good candy thermometer and was unhappy with the other options. With the clip on this one it works great for just this purpose. I've mastered fudge in just a couple of batches (and some good instruction). I would have recommended this thermometer even before this based on my previous two but the clip adds another dimension that makes it even better. I can't recommend this product enough.
Customer Review: Unsure if it's accurate Summary: 3 StarsI don't know if this product is reading the temperature's accurate, or if I'm not inserting it in the correct spot. When I measured the temperature of a steak, it read it was medium-well and when I cut into it; it was rare. Do thermometer's only work for large pieces of meat (like roasts or whole turkeys)? Anyway, I'm unsure if this product is good or not. Sorry!!
Customer Review: Designed for oven use, not BBQ or grill Summary: 3 StarsInstructions say that this can be used in the BBQ, but only as an instant read thermometer. Unfortunately, as an instant read it's kinda slow. It also has NO calibration capability; fortunately two of these units read the same temperature so I'm pretty sure the temp is accurate enough. As far as I can tell from researching customer comments, as well as my personal experience, none of the probes are built well and they are not interchangeable between units. If you want these things to last, follow the instructions: do not immerse the probe or it's cable in water. Be careful when washing; if water gets into the probe (through the cable) the probe will stop working. The probe must be sterilized before use, but only the part that goes into the meat.
Customer Review: No ON/OFF switch, seriously? Summary: 2 StarsIt is beyond me how a group of electronic designers built a battery powered device without an ON/OFF switch. I haven't left this on overnight to see if there's a nifty self-timed power-down, but somehow I doubt it.
I bought the item because it looked like the one Alton Brown uses, and I've had good luck following that trend. It also had a wide temperature range (32F - 392F) which was hard to find at the retail stores I visited. I was interested in using this as a fry thermometer also.
I have only inserted the battery, tested the functions, and searched like crazy for the non-existent ON/OFF switch (including searching the net, which brought me back here).
I believe Polder has other digital thermometers that actually do have an ON/OFF switch ... maybe the engineers are learning as they go.
I really wish I had read the reviews before buying this. I would not have bought a battery powered device without an OFF switch. I guess I'll be removing the battery to turn it off, and I'm sure I'll destroy the delicate little battery case as often as I turned my last digital thermometer ON/OFF (BTW, the temp range on that one was too narrow, and I dropped it in a pot of near boiling beer wort so it's a goner).
